This is the trailer for the film No Impact Man (2009) about the family who experimented for a full year with having "zero impact on the environment" while living in New York City.
A young couple with a 3-year old manages to live without electricity, generating no garbage, living without any packaging of any kind. They ate only local produce, and didn't use cars, busses, trains or even elevators - only bicycles.
Of course the cynical New York media had a field day with this, ridiculing the whole premise and reducing it to a mere gimmick. The New York Times headline was "The Year Without Toilet Paper". The wife even finds it ridiculous much of the time, making for good drama and amusement.
But filmmaker/father Colin Beavan prevails -- he drops 20 lbs, becomes happier, healthier, more connected, and gains a worldwide audience in the process.
Firstly, I hope you see this great film. Secondly, there is a worldwide experiment that you can learn more about and participate in any time you like: No Impact Experiment!
The No Impact Experiment is a one-week carbon cleanse. It is a chance for you to see what a difference no-impact living can have on your quality of life. It’s not about giving up creature comforts but an opportunity for you to test whether the modern “conveniences” you take for granted are actually making you happier or just eating away at your time and money.
