Here is at long last, a zero waste grocery store about to open its doors in Berlin.
At the time of this writing, there is still a crowd funding project raising money for the store, but they have big investors and they have already surpassed their fundraising goal. See details below if you're inspired to contribute.
The idea is simply that people will bring in, or can buy, reusable packaging to buy grocery items in bulk. They weigh the containers and charge you only for the amount you filled up.
Not only do we save the 3 lbs or so of trash (at least in the US) that we throw away per person per day, most of which is food packaging, but customers will only buy the amount they need.
Less food waste, less packaging waste - and they are sourcing local products as much as possible.
My local food coop lets you buy about 100 items this way in bulk, and I absolutely love bringing in my own containers. I go out of my way to shop there for this reason. It always feels like a satisfying experience to shop there, and I want to tell my 7th grade science teacher, NO trash to deal with when I unpack the bags!
