Gardening At Home Can..Save The World?

Roger Doiron has a subversive plot: The revolution shall begin with everyone growing food, on every little piece of land they possibly can get access to.

He is the founder and director of Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI), a Maine-based nonprofit network of over 25,000 individuals from 100 countries who are taking a hands-on approach to relocalizing the food supply.

He believes a genuine shift of power in society will follow when people take food production into their own hands. Some staggering statistics are offered here, that really take the conversation beyond gardening as simply a healthy, virtuous hobby.

To keep up with population growth, more food will need to be produced worldwide over the next 50 years than has been produced in the last TEN THOUSAND YEARS combined.

And we need to grow this food with less farmland, less oil, and less water.

2% of food now comes from backyard gardens. At the peak of the victory garden era during WWII, we were growing 40%!

We can do that again Doiron says, in fact we HAVE to. He believes that increasing access to foods that are healthy for us and the planet is the biggest challenge we face, and that backyard gardens represent a cost effective investment and a real solution.

Everyone has a role to play in the revolution, whether you have a yard or not!
