Toby Hemenway shares his wisdom on the issue of native plants. He starts with the premise that one of the principles in permaculture is that you start by planting natives.
However, supporting native plants only gets a little complicated when you factor in that your ecological footprint outside of your yard is constantly commissioning, through the food you eat, even if it is local and organic, the planting of all kinds of non native species, for ex. oats and corn.
He also raises the questions of: what is a native? When is a native? Are invasive species and imported crops, after a few hundred or thousand years, considered native?
Toby Hemenway is the author of Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, one of the best-selling permaculture books in the world.
