Raise The Awareness, Raise The Standards

It's about time! Finally there are labeling programs in place to further the advancement of humane treatment of animals on farms across the United States.

Nextworldtv truly applauds and supports all the vegans who boycott this industry COMPLETELY. That IS the best way to go. We feel however, that the standards imposed by labeling programs like these are the next best thing for those who will still buy meat, eggs and dairy. These organizations are raising awareness about the issues on factory farms, and the standards they demand will raise the quality and the price of meat.

More expensive meat would be better for everyone. Eating less meat would be better for everyone, which goes without saying. We take these cheap "products" for granted as it is now. It is the mindless casualness with which Americans consume meat that must be changed.

Everyone will not become vegetarian or vegan, but what if many, what if ALL meat eaters became clear about the story of factory farms -- and IF they chose to continue eating meat, paid the extra cost for humanely raised meat?

That means less animals are dying and suffering. That means we are going in the right direction.

Today we highlight one of these labeling programs: Humane Farm Animal Care

From their website:

"The Certified Humane Raised and Handled program is the only farm animal welfare and food labeling program in the U.S. dedicated to improving the welfare of farm animals from birth through slaughter for the 10 billion farm animals raised for food each year.

The Certified Humane Raised and Handled® label assures consumers:

- That the producer meets our standards and applies them to animals from birth through slaughter.

- Animals have ample space, shelter and gentle handling to limit stress.

- Ample fresh water and a healthy diet of quality feed, without added antibiotics or hormones.

- Cages, crates and tie stalls are among the forbidden practices, and animals must be free to do what comes naturally. For example, chickens are able to flap their wings and dust bathe, and pigs have the space to move around and root.

- Producers must comply with food safety and environmental regulations. Processors must comply with the American Meat Institute Standards (AMI), a higher standard for slaughtering farm animals than the federal Humane Slaughter Act.
