In 2000, Daniel Suelo quit money. He moved to the wilderness of southeastern Utah.
He lives in a cave and forages for wild foods and eats roadkill. He dumpster dives for meals and sometimes accepts gifts from strangers, but doesn't accept government welfare, does not file tax returns and in fact, has no money at all.
He is an active blogger though, and his message is that money is an illusion.
He writes: "My philosophy is only to use only what is freely given or discarded or already present and already running."
He believes we are enslaved by the money system, and he has dedicated his life to demonstrating that we can liberate ourselves if we are willing to take the blinders off. He cultivates freely giving and freely receiving and believes that is our true nature. Suelo believes money will become obsolete.
This is the story of a man who decided to live outside of society, and is happier for it. His example will at least provoke some serious soul-searching about our collective addiction to cash.
