Departing from Monaco, France on Sept. 28th of 2010, the "Planet Solar" embarked on a very special voyage: this is the first boat capable of traveling the world using renewable energy.
Planet Solar is a Catamaran shaped boat powered entirely by solar energy, generated by it's own solar surfaces.
Built at the Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel in northern Germany, the Planet Solar weighs 60 tons and measures 100 x 50 feet. She can go for 3 days on the battery. It is capable of speeds up to about 15 nautical miles per hour.
At the time of this writing, July 2011, the trip is about halfway completed as the vessel approaches The Philippines. They plan to arrive back in Monaco in April of 2012.
The key aim of the project is to demonstrate what can be achieved with today's renewable energy technologies and inspire others on a path towards carbon-reduction.
"Each step in the PlanetSolar project is a step further in the technological development of renewable energy sources. Thanks to ambitious projects like this scientific research is making progress," said owner Immo Ströher.
